The Health Professionals and Allied Employees (HPAE) is the largest union of Registered Nurses and health care professionals in New Jersey and an affiliate of the American Federation of Teachers (AFT). With more than 14,000 members in our 20 locals, we are a union of nurses, social workers, therapists, technicians, medical researchers, and other healthcare professionals. We work in hospitals, nursing homes, home care agencies, blood banks, and university research facilities throughout New Jersey and the Philadelphia area. We are a leading voice bargaining and advocating for safer standards in healthcare to improve patient care and protect our healthcare workforce.
Job Duties
- Responsible for identifying, developing, and sustaining organizing committees of healthcare workers in strategic facilities throughout New Jersey to take collective action for improved working conditions and standards.
- Responsible for recruiting, developing, and maintaining relationships with healthcare workers.
- Effectively conduct worksite and home visits on a regular basis. Can maintain and move turf, independently.
- In varying degrees, participate in the development and execution of strategic campaign plans with the goals, strategies, and tactics necessary to carry out the plan.
- Build relationships with and mobilize our members to be a part of organizational goals and take campaign assignments. Regular follow-up is necessary.
- Manage accurate worker lists, database, and charts, and provide regular and accurate reports to Director of Organizing or Lead assigned to head up the campaign.
- Create leaflets, talking points, and other materials for campaigns.
- Prepare workers to publicly share their stories.
- Travel and in-person work required. Must live in New Jersey, vicinity considered. Some tele-work possible.
Experience/Qualifications
- Strong commitment to the labor movement and social justice
- Minimum two years of successful experience organizing in union, worker center, or community context including making effective home calls and one-on-one worker meetings.
- Experience building, organizing, and maintaining committees in multi-racial workplaces or communities.
- Strong listening skills. Can work independently to achieve goals.
- Familiarity with New Jersey, community, and healthcare issues is a plus.
- Ability to work varied hours including nights, weekends, and holidays, during peak points in organizing drives.
- Effective time management.
- Bilingual English-Spanish preferred.
- Computer literacy is required
- Reliable transportation and a valid driver’s license are required
Compensation Package: This position is covered by a collective bargaining agreement with WBNG Local 32035. Starting salary ranges from $73,133 to $91,630 plus credit for years of experience. HPAE offers a competitive benefit package which includes mileage reimbursement and allowance, cell phone allowance, excellent health insurance, HRA, dental insurance, long-term disability, life insurance, employer contributions towards retirement plans, and generous paid leave. Optional benefits include FSA (health/dependent care), and AFLAC.
